Medicinal cannabis is a legal, prescription-only treatment in New Zealand. Whether it is appropriate for you is a medical question. We are the clinic that treats it as one.
Cannalyze doctors are registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand. A consultation is an assessment, not a formality. If treatment is not clinically appropriate, we will tell you so and explain why.

Assessment
The doctor reviews your history and decides whether medicinal cannabis treatment is clinically appropriate. Not everyone is prescribed. You will be told plainly either way.

Pharmacy and follow-up
If prescribed, your script goes to a pharmacy that can dispense it, collected or couriered. A $39 follow-up every three months keeps treatment reviewed.

First consultation
20 to 30 minutes by video or phone. Full medical review, eligibility assessment and treatment discussion. Refunded in full if cancelled with 24 hours' notice.

Follow-up consultation
10 to 15 minutes by video or phone to review how treatment is going and adjust where appropriate. Required at least every three months.

Medicines are dispensed by a pharmacy and paid for separately. Medicinal cannabis products are not funded by Pharmac and most patients spend between roughly $100 and $400 a month depending on what is prescribed. Your doctor will discuss likely cost with you before prescribing so there are no surprises. Transferring from another clinic with a current prescription: $39 for the first consultation once we have reviewed your records.

05 · Sport and the rules
Still competing? Read this first.
A lot of the people we see are still active. Masters rugby, cycling, running, skiing, club cricket. If you compete in any sport that is subject to anti-doping rules, medicinal cannabis has consequences you need to understand before you book, not after.
Under the World Anti-Doping Code, cannabinoids other than cannabidiol are prohibited in competition. In New Zealand the Sport Integrity Commission applies those rules and "in competition" begins at 11.59pm the night before you compete. A prescription does not exempt you. A therapeutic use exemption is a separate application with its own criteria.
Our doctors will ask whether you compete and will tell you straight what that means for you. If you are unsure whether your sport is covered, check with the Sport Integrity Commission before your consultation.

07 · Questions
The questions people ask before they book.
Yes. Since 1 April 2020 medicinal cannabis products that meet the Ministry of Health's minimum quality standard can be prescribed by a registered doctor. They are prescription-only unapproved medicines, which means the prescribing doctor takes responsibility for deciding whether treatment is appropriate for you.
No referral. There is no official list of qualifying conditions in New Zealand; the decision rests with the doctor's clinical judgement after taking your history.
No. A consultation is an assessment. Some people are not suitable and some are better served by other treatment. If that is you, the doctor will explain why. The consultation fee covers the doctor's time either way.
Only if you ask us to write to them, which we recommend but do not require. Your records are held securely and are not shared without your consent, except where the law requires it.
Some medicinal cannabis products can impair driving and can be detected in roadside saliva testing. A prescription is not a defence at the roadside. Your doctor will talk through this with you in the consultation and the safe answer for some products is not to drive.
Commonly reported effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and changes in appetite or mood. Your doctor will go through the risks that apply to you, including interactions with other medicines.

Medicinal cannabis is generally not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding and doctors take extra care with younger adults. Book the consultation anyway if you have questions; a straight answer is what it is for.
